One of the peculiarities of the area is the names, in the local dialect, given to the inhabitants of the different villages.

The commune of Saint Chaffrey covers several villages and hamlets: Saint Chaffrey (the ’Tabazaou’), Chantemerle (the ’Macciafave’), Villard Laté (the ’Tartalis’), and Le Poncet…

The commune of La Salle des Alpes covers La Salle (the ’Salati’), Le Bez (the ’têtes gelées’ or frozen heads…), Villeneuve, Les Pananches, Moulin Baron, and La Chirouze.

Finally there is the commune of Le Monêtier Les Bains whose main village is Monêtier Les Bains (the ’Tripes Chaudes’ or hot guts…) but it also includes the following hamlets: Le Casset, Le Lauzet, Les Boussardes, Les Guibertes, Le Freyssinet and Le Serre Barbin.
