The Loi Montagne 2025-2026 and its regulations
The Loi Montagne is a French regulation that comes into force in November 2021. Its aim is to improve winter road safety in mountainous areas, by requiring vehicles (including motor homes) to be equipped with winter tires, 4-season tires or anti-skid devices (chains or snow socks).
Period and zones concerned
- Period of application: from November 1 to March 31 each year, and the Hautes-Alpes is one of the departments concerned.
Obligations for drivers
- Mandatory equipment: winter tires, 4-season tires or removable anti-skid devices.
- Penalties: drivers not equipped risk fines and penalties.
