WEBCAM COL DU LAUTARET - LIVE CONDITIONS
Get informed before you hit the road. The 360° panoramic webcam at the Col du Lautaret gives you a real-time view of conditions on the D1091, the main road linking Grenoble to Briançon through the Hautes-Alpes.
Snow conditions, visibility, traffic: all can be observed live from this strategic point perched at an altitude of 2,058 m.
The Col du Lautaret: a key pass to Serre Chevalier
Located at an altitude of 2,058 m in the Hautes-Alpes département (05), the Col du Lautaret is one of the busiest passes in the French Alps. It is the main access route to Serre Chevalier and Briançon from Grenoble and the Romanche valley, via the D1091 trunk road.
Unlike the Col du Galibier, which closes every winter, the Col du Lautaret remains open all year round, barring exceptional weather conditions. It is equipped with a 500-meter-long avalanche-proof tunnel (the Marionnaise) on the east side, and is constantly monitored by the Hautes-Alpes Departmental Council.
In winter, conditions can change very quickly: snowfall, freezing rain, reduced visibility, snow removal convoys... Check the webcam before each departure, especially if you're traveling early in the morning or in the evening, or call the inforoutes05 voice server on 04 65 03 00 05
What you can see on this webcam
The camera is installed on the roof of the Hôtel des Glaciers , right in the heart of the pass. Its 360° rotation allows you to observe :
Road conditions and traffic on the D1091, in both directions - towards Grenoble (Romanche side) and towards Briançon (Guisane side). In the event of fresh snow, black ice or a snow removal convoy, you'll see it immediately.
Weather conditions at altitude - cloud cover, precipitation, visibility. The weather at Le Lautaret can differ significantly from that in the valleys: it's not unusual for the pass to be in the clouds, whereas it's sunny in Briançon.
Snow cover in the area - a valuable indicator at the start and end of the season for estimating the condition of the Serre Chevalier slopes and anticipating skiing conditions.
Glacier panorama - on a clear day, the webcam offers a breathtaking view of the Massif de la Meije and its glaciers, as well as the start of the road up to the Col du Galibier (2,642 m), which is closed in winter.
Road conditions: what you need to know before setting off
The Route du Lautaret is classified as a priority route in winter by the Hautes-Alpes department. It is regularly cleared of snow and salted. However, certain precautions must be taken:
Compulsory equipment - From November 1 to March 31, chains or snow tires are compulsory on this road in application of the Loi Montagne II. Check your equipment before setting off.
Temporary closures - In the event of a high avalanche risk or extreme conditions, the pass may be temporarily closed, sometimes for a few hours, for preventive shooting or intervention. Consult Info Route 05 for real-time alerts.
High-risk times - Conditions are generally at their most difficult between 5 and 9 a.m., after a cold night or an overnight snowfall. The webcam allows you to wait or to leave in full knowledge of the facts.
Le Lautaret, much more than just a mountain pass
The Col du Lautaret is much more than just a mountain pass. It's an exceptional place to discover all year round.
In summer, it is home to the famous Jardin Botanique Alpin du Lautaret, one of Europe's finest mountain gardens, managed by Grenoble Alpes University. More than 2,000 plant species from the world's great mountain ranges are cultivated here. It is also a legendary stopover for the Tour de France cycling race.
In winter, it marks the threshold between two worlds: the Romanche valley on the Oisans side, and the Guisane valley which leads directly to the heart of the Serre Chevalier ski area - the 4th largest in France.
